‘Crashing out’ melodrama

Troubling terminology

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – Arising out of the comments of Pat Bonner (Letters, April 24th), I would appeal to sports reporters to cease routinely referring to any losing team or individual as “crashing out” of a competition. This term might have some impact when describing a heavy defeat but to describe a team losing by one goal after penalties as “crashing out” is rather silly and melodramatic. – Yours, etc,

PASCHAL HOULIHAN,

Limerick.
