Sir, – A letter writer (August 6th) criticises President Michael D Higgins for expressing condolences to Iran on the death of its president and congratulating the new president (Masoud Pezeshkian) on his election, as “ill judged”. Iran’s involvement in supporting terrorism and destabilising neighbouring countries is cited.
Would the President be similarly “ill-judged” in offering condolences or congratulations to current or future presidents of the US? I suspect not.
However, when one considers the US supply of weapons and bombs to Israel and its history of destabilising neighbouring (and not so neighbouring) countries, is there much difference? –
Yours, etc,
