Sir, – What a lovely piece by Céire Sadlier (“I spend a lot of time with men. It’s taught me to enjoy the silence ,” June 11th).
As an Irish person it has taken me some time and practice becoming comfortable in silence and refraining from filling each conversational lull with mindless chatter.
It also reminded me of a quip my father used to mutter: “The only thing worse than awkward silence is small talk”. – Yours, etc,
