Sir, – Your report on the flood protection plans of the Office of Public Works (OPW) reveals an extraordinary level of complacency on the part of the agency charged with protecting homes and communities from flooding (“Predicting the next flood: ‘It’s a very hard thing to be scared in your own home’”, News, September 1st).
It seems the OPW has a policy of nothing is done until everything that has to be done is agreed. That is madness.
In my electoral area the people of Sandymount have been crying out for action for decades and are now told it will be at least 2030 before action is taken. Why?
Most people agree that the promenade should be extended and brought further into the bay near the nature park and most people agree that the beach wall needs to be raised.

Why can those preliminary works not be started so that final measures can be implemented more quickly? The lethargy of Government agencies is one of the biggest problems facing our country and your report on the flood protection plans simply reinforce that view. – Yours, etc,
