Dogs and coastal amenities

Sir, – Dr Diarmuid Ó Gráda makes an excellent case for restricting dogs’ access to Bull Island (Letters, February 5th). Dogs have become a major problem here in Greystones too, as it is impossible to go for a walk without looking down at one’s feet to avoid “the droppings”. Even on the South Beach you have to keep an eye out – and the beach’s “Blue Flag” designation seems in danger.

The Bray Head Walk is often disgusting at the Greystones end. Clearly many people get great pleasure from their dogs, who become honorary members of the family; the animals themselves clearly enjoy their escapades on the sand, and most dog-owners do clean up after their pet.

But maybe it is time for Wicklow County Council finally to employ some active dog wardens to vigorously gather fines from dog owners who avoid clearing up after their pets? – Yours, etc,

IGOR CUSACK,
