Sir, – This morning , as I gingerly picked my way through the wet leaves on the footpaths near my home, I remembered the days when a workman, armed merely with a barrow, spade and brush, regularly cleared not only fallen leaves, but also the weeds growing at kerbsides, leaving the roads in pristine condition. Nowadays there is modern equipment, which should greatly reduce the time for the tasks, but nobody does the work.
The leaves I mention have been on the paths for at least six weeks. When wet they are a public danger, especially to the elderly, and the drains are blocked.
There are many more leaves waiting to fall. Will we be knee-deep in them in the next few weeks? – Yours, etc,
