Field Marshal Frederick Roberts

Sir, – Why has Waterford seen fit to unveil a bust to Field Marshal Frederick Roberts (October 5th)? Roberts represents the very worst of the militarism that characterised the British Empire. He was involved in the bloody suppression of the Indian Mutiny, in the equally barbaric invasion of Afghanistan and, as a die-hard Tory, he supported the aims of the Curragh Mutiny.

We ought to remember those who were slaughtered during the first World War, but we ought not to celebrate those savage jingoists who sent them out to be slaughtered. – Yours, etc,

NIALL GILLESPIE,

Dublin 8.
