Freeing up the Custom House

Sir, – Margaret Coyle rightly advocates for the State to negotiate with Bank of Ireland for possession of the College Green building in Dublin (Letters, July 12th). However, the State is in possession of an equally iconic building, the Custom House, and it does not utilise this as a civic amenity. It is currently used as an office block for civil servants.

While it was built to be used for that purpose, surely today’s civil servants would rather a purpose-built office or indeed to work from home, and we could use the Custom House as a civic amenity. – Yours, etc,

ROBERT DONOHOE,

Dublin 16.
