Sir, – Eamonn McCann's endorsement of Jeremy Corbyn's simplistic arguments in favour of scrapping the Trident nuclear system would not find much favour with the tens of thousands of workers whose livelihoods depend on this project ("Corbyn stance on scrapping nuclear missiles makes sense", Opinion & Analysis, November 12th).
Think of all the scientists and engineers of every variety, the builders, the small-parts suppliers, the caterers to these people, the office workers who handle their pay and conditions. I could go on.
Think of the taxes these people pay which go back into the economy to pay for other services.
History shows that you cannot just dump an industry and redeploy its workers overnight.
Given that nuclear war has been avoided since 1945 the case for deterrence is undeniable. Perhaps McCann and Corbyn could salve their consciences by regarding the whole thing as a government job-creation scheme?
Incidentally I am always predisposed to disagree with McCann’s views while his column is illustrated with what appears to be a very self-satisfied smirk on his face. Surely it’s time for a more appealing photograph? – Yours, etc,
