Libel damages and press freedom

Sir, – You report that national newspapers are "deeply concerned" about the scale of libel damages in a particular case, and that such damages represent a threat to media freedom ("Media group takes European action over Monica Leech case", July 22nd).

There is a simple solution available to newspapers – do not libel people. – Yours, etc,
