Sir, – Declan Kelly asserts that those seeking asylum must be asked if they are willing to embrace the host culture (Letters, March 14th).
Does Mr Kelly really see a culture as a single entity? Is a culture not a melting pot of individuals?
He also cites human rights as something that citizens have fought for in the past, which is true of many countries around the world. If a “culture” exists, philosophically speaking, it only can do so if those individual subjects are free to express their opinions and beliefs.
May I remind Mr Kelly of the words of Norwegian prime minister Jens Stoltenberg, after the massacre perpetrated by Anders Breivik in 2011: “Our response is more democracy, more openness, and more humanity.” – Yours, etc,
