Sir, – In your edition of June 10th you published the latest list of tax defaulters issued by the Revenue Commissioners.
Once again medical consultants are featured with three names, one for over €400,000 and two for about €160,000 each. In the list of defaulters in March there were five medical consultants named.
The vast majority of medical consultants are presumably tax abiding and they must be ashamed of their colleagues who bring their profession into disrepute.
To have their profession listed among the fast food outlets, car dealers, landlords and clothing wholesalers must be deeply embarrassing.
It is time for the Irish Hospital Consultants Association to formally encourage its members to “pay their taxes” rather than adopt a policy of saying that “personal taxes are a private matter”.
Perhaps it is time for the Minister for Finance to introduce tax clearance certificates for the medical profession so that the State makes no payments to medical consultants without production of a tax clearance certificate as is practised in other businesses. – Yours, etc, DAVID McCABE Blackrock, Co Dublin.
