The fishing industry’s jetsam

Sir, – We did a community clean-up of Spanish Point beach in Co Clare yesterday and I was surprised to note that most of the rubbish on the shore consisted of jetsam from the fishing industry. Pieces of net, fishing line, rope and pieces of boxes used to store fish made up the great majority of the plastic we collected. One would imagine that the fishing community would be most interested in protecting the marine environment and avoid abandoning their waste in it. – Yours, etc,

AIDAN O’SULLIVAN,

Spanish Point,

Co Clare.
