The Premiership

Sir, – I opened the sports section and there it was. It’s back, the English Premiership. I thought to myself, another nine months of being bombarded with this. Every newspaper I open, every radio station I tune into and every TV channel I turn on, there it is, this soulless league.

And worse, Irish voices, from broadcasters to the man in the street, proudly proclaiming their love for teams that represent cities from Liverpool to the boroughs of London and many more, often obscure, towns and counties in between.

In what other country is there such huge support and promotion of a foreign league while at the same time wilfully neglecting their own?

Can you imagine tens of thousands of Irish rugby fans heading over to England every weekend to support their beloved Wasps, Saracens, Harlequins or whatever rather than support Munster or Leinster? And there is no doubting GAA followers’ pride and their support of the sports teams that represent their communities and county.
