Sir, – In reference to Simon Carswell’s 19th-century inspired take: “Donald Trump: the Snake-oil Salesman” (July 23rd) writer Seán Ó Faoláin in 1949 hit the nail on the head: “We tend to think of the American as a modern product. Half of him is. The other half is ruled by atavism of the 19th century. He is feeling the throb of his grandfather’s heart, . . . stubbornly unmalleable and reactionary.”
Any other unintended insights from Irish writers on Trump? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Neither his campaign nor the media has noted that Donald Trump studied for a couple of years at Fordham University, known as the Jesuit university of New York.
The last presidential nominee educated at a Jesuit university (Georgetown) was Bill Clinton.

Sir, – Is the search on to find Mr Trump’s ancestral Irish home, or better still to prove he has no Irish connections ?
