Sir, – Finn McRedmond ("Myth of global Britain laid bare in utter shallowness", Opinion & Analysis, August 26th) combines a sense of humour with a highly critical analysis of the Conservative government in the UK.
In a highly significant move, the Scottish Green Party has recently moved closer to Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP; in Northern Ireland, the SDLP and Alliance parties appear to be increasingly more reflective of the public mood than the DUP; and in Wales, Plaid Cymru remains a potent political force. In such a fluid political environment, no one can really predict the likely outcome, but suffice it to say that the implications of such a wide-ranging constitutional fluidity for Ireland, North and South, are immense.
Should the Scottish parliament proceed with a second independence referendum, this would surely increase the pressure for a united Ireland and a Welsh independence referendum.
With a certain degree of lightheadedness, I could see the end of the United Kingdom, with England sailing away on its own with Beefy Botham at the helm and leading to God knows where.
