US tax reform

Sir, – I refer to Cliff Taylor's report "Donald Trump's US tax reform a significant challenge for Ireland" (November 30th).

American criticism of Ireland’s moderate, and sometimes laxly enforced, corporate tax regime was a blatant case of the pot calling the kettle black, particularly since the pot leaked far more than the kettle was designed to pour.

Although it may make it more difficult for Ireland to attract investment from multinational companies, I heartily welcome the provisions in the new legislation that will end the arrangement by which companies could transfer untaxed profits abroad.

This will reduce considerably the flow of funds, including those that, on paper at least, passed through Ireland, to tax havens. That can only be of benefit to the world economy. – Yours, etc,
