Wildflowers and poisons

Sir, – Further to recent correspondence about spraying verges with weedkiller (Letters, May 14th and 17th), over the weekend I was walking along a short stretch of laneway in Co Kerry and I counted nearly 30 different wildflowers. This number did not include the great variety of grasses, ferns and small shrubs, just growing wild and free for all to enjoy. If allowed to continue, this obsession with "cleaning up" with poisonous sprays would destroy this rich biodiversity. Not to mention all the insects and pollinators that live and thrive in that environment. – Yours, etc,

PHYLLIDA WHITE,

Kilmanagh, Co Kilkenny.
