Women and rugby

Sir, – I refer to Una Mullally's article "Women playing rugby do not deserved to be mauled" (Opinion & Analysis, August 14th). The practice of using one man's ignorant opinion to suggest widespread male fragility is becoming as tiresome as the original chauvinistic (and irrelevant) comments made by those individuals craving publicity.

Would it not be better to disregard these comments rather than trying to pit sexes against each other for the sake of an article? If you asked around, you would find that 99 per cent of men encourage participation in sport, regardless of gender, so why encourage the 1 per cent by giving them a public platform? – Yours, etc,

TOM FORAN,

New Ross, Co Wexford.
