Celebrating innovation and design: Building and Architect of the Year Awards

With 18 categories covering architects from North and South, the inaugural Building and Architect awards is set to be an exciting event

The Building and Architect of the Year Awards 2017 take place on the 8th of June in the Mansion House in Dublin. Some of the most prominent architects currently practicing in Ireland will be present hoping to win one of the inaugural awards.

In total 18 categories will be celebrated on the night with entries from all over the country, North and South,  both urban and rural designs.

These inaugaral awards have been warmly received by the architecture profession. The categories encompass a broad range of building types including residential, public and commerical.

The entries will be judged by a panel of expert judges with Frank McDonald being the judging coordinator. McDonald said: "The standard of entries is extremely high showing the innovation and success of the Irish arhitecture profession. I believe we have chosen worthy winners in each of the categories as well as an extraordinarily captivating overall winner."

Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, directors at Grafton Architects, will be receiving the Outstanding Achievement for Architecture award. Earlier this year Farrell and McNamara were appointed by Paolo Barrata, president of La Biennale, to be the curators of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. The appointment is being recognised as a seminal moment for contemporary Irish architecture, because they are the first Irish architects to be invited to curate the biennale in its forty-year history.

The 16th International Architecture Exhibition will take place from Saturday, May 26th to Sunday, November 25th, 2018 in Venice.

Commenting on the awards Frank McDonald said, "I'm delighted that the award for an Outstanding Achievement in Architecture has gone to Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell, of Grafton Architects. Not only have they built great work in Ireland, but also in Milan, Lima, Toulouse and elsewhere, quite apart from being curators of the 2018 Venice Biennale."

"The architecture discipline and all those shortlisted for the Building of the Year Awards have made real and tangible contributions to enriching the lives of those who live, work or relax in the buildings they have created as well as Irish society as a whole," he said.
