Hurling: Walsh Cup Final: Kilkenny Boss Brian Cody hailed the timing of his side's first Walsh Cup title since 1992 with the league just seven days away.
After losing the last three finals in a row, Kilkenny recorded a comfortable six-point victory over Wexford at Wexford Park on Saturday afternoon.
"After three final losses in a row to Wexford, Dublin and UCD, it was a sweet victory ahead of next weekend's national league opener with Waterford," said Cody. "It's 13 years since we last won the competition so it great to end that losing run and get another piece of silverware in the cabinet. A lot of those players have All-Ireland medals but that was their first Walsh Cup medal."
Wexford boss Séamus Murphy lamented the poor finishing of his forwards. "We struck 16 wides, missed some easy frees, that tells its own story. But we fought back well in the second half." Kilkenny had led 1-9 to 0-2 at the interval.
SCORERS - Kilkenny: H Shefflin (0-5, two frees, one 65); J Maher (1-0); J Hoyne, E Brennan, W O'Dwyer (0-2 each); JJ Delaney, C Phelan (0-1 each). Wexford: P Carley (0-4, three frees, one 65); N Higgins (0-3); B Lambert (0-1, free); D Lyng, D Mythen (0-1 each).
John O'Leary's Dublin chalked up an impressive victory over Louth in Division One B of the Suzuki women's National Football League at Termonfeckin yesterday, 3-6 to 0-2. Elsewhere, there was only one other game in the league with Cork's B team beating Clare 0-14 to 0-3 in Division Two A at Milltown Malbay.
