Colm Bonnar ‘relieved’ of duties as Tipperary hurling manager

Tipperary GAA have terminated the appointment of senior hurling manager Colm Bonnar. A statement released on Thursday morning, confirmed the departure of the former All-Ireland winner after just one year in charge.

“The management committee of Tipperary GAA met last night to discuss the 2022 senior hurling season. Following a very comprehensive review the management committee have made the decision to relieve Colm Bonnar from his duties as Tipperary senior hurling manager.

“Tipperary GAA wish to thank Colm for his contribution during his time as senior hurling manager and wish him well in to the future.”

There had been rumours of disquiet among players in recent days as well as the departure of some of his management team.

Coach Tommy Dunne and selector, Paul Curran had both walked away. Bonnar, appointed in the wake of Liam Sheedy’s stepping down last year, has had a difficult year in charge and Tipperary lost all of their Munster round-robin championship matches.

There is speculation that current Waterford manager Liam Cahill, who guided Tipperary to under-age All-Ireland success may be in the frame even though he opted to stay with Waterford last year rather than return to his own county when the vacancy arose.

There is however uncertainty over whether he will stay for a further year despite recent indications that he intended to. Were he to become available he would almost definitely be appointed by Tipperary.
