Limerick hurler axed from squad over alleged public order incident

Gardaí arrested a man in his 20s after incident in pub in early hours on Monday

A member of the Limerick senior hurling panel is unlikely to play any further part in the county’s defence of its Munster and All-Ireland titles after he was allegedly involved in a public order incident in a pub in the early hours of Monday morning.

It is understood that the player was informed by management on Monday that he would not be considered as part of the 26-man panel after being arrested and questioned by Gardaí over the alleged incident.

Gardaí were alerted to a pub in the city centre in the early hours of Monday morning following an alleged altercation between a number of males.

The alleged incident in the pub took place a few hours after the defending All-Ireland senior hurling champions defeated Tipperary at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. The incident is believed to have involved a Tipperary hurler who was allegedly assaulted.

A statement released by Limerick GAA on Tuesday night read: “On Sunday last a member of the Limerick Senior Hurling squad was involved in a breach of our team protocols.

“The matter has been dealt with by management internally and no further comment will be made on the matter at this time.”

A spokesperson for Tipperary GAA told the Irish Independent that they are “not aware of any alleged incident in Limerick following last Sunday’s senior hurling game”.

Gardaí in Limerick said they were “investigating a public order incident which occurred at a licensed premises on Denmark Street, Co Limerick, in the early hours of Monday 9th May 2022.

“A man aged in his 20s was arrested at the scene and taken to Henry Street Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. He has since been released,” added a Garda spokesman.

Gardaí are now preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which will then decide whether or not the person arrested will face criminal charges.

It’s understood the alleged injured party has not made a statement of complaint to Gardaí. When asked about this a Garda spokesman replied that “no further information” was available.

When contacted for a response, a spokesman for Limerick GAA said it was not making any further comment.

Limerick’s win over Tipperary moved them closer to a place in the Munster final. They face local rivals Clare in Ennis this Sunday.
