Weld may have to bow to veteran Fit The Cove

Dermot Weld can land this evening's Listed Galway feature with Ebeyina, but even the greatest Ballybrit legend of all might have to make way on centre stage today if the veteran Fit The Cove can secure a fifth course victory.

It is a decade since the remarkable 14-year-old first won at the track and two years since he last won at Galway, while the unusual longevity of his career is only emphasised by how he won twice here in 2009.

At an age when most flat performers are long since retired, Fit The Cove returned to action at Ballinrobe during the summer and shaped with such promise he was raised 5lbs by the handicapper.

With a decent draw for today’s mile handicap, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if on his 104th career start the sentimental favourite makes it a lucky-13th career victory.

Ebeyina in contrast is having just a fourth ever race but an easier surface than on her previous couple of starts could see her graduate to a black type success in an Ardilaun Oyster Stakes where Aidan O'Brien runs five.

However, even with a wide draw, the first-time blinkered Frozen Lake may prove too good if stepping up on his Curragh fourth to Ol' Man River.

Botanical Lady is 11lbs higher compared to when winning at the festival but the value of a low draw over the specialist distance of seven furlongs is important and Fit The Cove's stable-companion might prove tough to peg back.
