Ireland escape with relatively clean bill of health

After yesterday’s brutal, physical encounter against Australia at the Aviva Ireland have managed to come out relatively unscathed in terms of injuries.

Johnathan Sexton, Rob Kearney and Gordon D'Arcy, who all played key roles in the 26-23 victory, had to be replaced in the dying throes of an absorbing encounter with suspected concussions.

The IRFU have a released a statement regarding the fitness of the trio, it said: “Gordon, Rob and Johnny were removed from the field of play with suspected concussions. They underwent the HIA (Head Injury Assessment) and were assessed again today by the Irish medical team.

“They will complete the HIA process with a further assessment after 48hrs and will follow the return to play protocols at their respective clubs.

“In addition, Rob had a scan today after taking a knock to his shoulder during the game.”

Conor Murray also had to leave the field with a head injury, giving Eoin Reddan a four minute cameo, but was deemed able to continue playing by the match doctor:

The statement said: “Conor was assessed today and will be assessed again after 48hrs as he completes the HIA process.”

Despite a number of very sore bodies Joe Schmidt’s side have emerged from three gruelling test matches with a relatively clean bill of health.

The statement said: “A number of the squad reported bumps and bruises but nothing of concern following an intense three weeks of Test rugby.”
