Wilson ruled out as Christie and McGoldrick get first Irish call

James McCarthy to travel to Dublin for further assessment on hamstring injury

Stoke centre back Marc Wilson has been ruled out of next Friday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland in Glasgow, with Martin O'Neill including the uncapped duo of Derby defender Cyrus Christie and Ipswich forward David McGoldrick in his final 27-man squad.

Wilson, an ever present alongside John O’Shea so far in the campaign, went off after 26 minutes of Stoke’s 2-1 victory over Spurs at White Hart Lane with a hamstring strain.

Glenn Whelan has also failed in his bid to make it back in time for the game against Gordon Strachan's side at Celtic Park after breaking his leg in the drawn game away to Germany.

The good news for O’Neill came with confirmation from Everton that James McCarthy will travel to Dublin for assessment on the hamstring injury he picked up in the 1-1 with Sunderland.

The midfielder completed the 90 minutes, making a late goal-line clearance, but suffered tightness in the hamstring afterwards.

Christie, a 22-year-old attack-minded right back, and 26-year-old striker McGoldrick get their first call-ups after their documentation was finalised last week.

Christie has played 16 of 17 games for a Rams side flying high at the top of the Championship, setting up Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick for the winning goal on his debut against Rotherham at the start of the season. He started his career at his hometown club Coventry City before signing a three-year deal with Derby back in July.

Nottingham-born has played with both County and Forest in his home town as well as Southampton. A loan spell at Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town turned in to a permanent two-year deal at the club in the summer of 2013.

He has forged a strong partnership with Ireland forward Daryl Murphy and has scored 23 goals in 60 appearances for the Tractor Boys.

Both Christie and McGoldrick qualify under the grandparent rule.

O’Neill’s squad will assemble this evening ahead of the week’s first training session in Malahide on Tuesday morning.
