Our 27 new academic colleagues will join a university community that has defined respect and openness as two of our core values. Our strategy for equality, diversity and inclusion aims to foster a campus culture which is welcoming, inclusive, safe and free from discrimination, where the contribution of all members of our university community is recognised and valued.

Ours is a diverse academic community that is globally connected. One in five university colleagues came to Galway from overseas and we are engaged in research collaborations with over 4,000 institutions in 136 countries. As a member of the ENLIGHT network of ten European universities, we are deepening our teaching and research partnerships across Europe.

The renewal of our institutional Athena SWAN Bronze Award and the achievement of 12 Athena SWAN School Awards to date is evidence of our progress in embedding a culture where all staff and students are afforded the dignity and opportunities they deserve. The achievement of a Silver Athena SWAN award for our School of Engineering is particularly notable, making this the first Engineering School in Ireland to achieve a Silver award and only the second Silver award held in Ireland.

A Sustainable Future

As the effects of the climate crisis continue to reverberate around the globe, our university community is focused on the urgency of transitioning to a sustainable future. Sustainability is one of our core values, as demanded by our students and in response to the pressing challenges of our time. Our significant progress is evidenced by the Times Higher Education, which ranks University of Galway 34th in the world – and first in Ireland – for our impact on the Sustainable Development Goals.

We have been particularly successful in the area of sustainable consumption and production, for which we are ranked fifth in the world by Times Higher Education. We also stand out on the world stage for our impact on renewable energy, life below water, health and wellbeing, sustainable cities and communities, peace and justice and the quality and impact of our sustainability partnerships, for all of which we are counted among the Top 50 worldwide.

Because of our university community’s commitment to sustainability, University of Galway has been designated the Government of Ireland’s SDG Champion for 2023–24.

A University for the Public Good

As a research-led institution, University of Galway brings clarity and impact to the biggest challenges facing our people and planet. Our academics pursue knowledge without limits in a variety of fields, whether that’s putting a cost on climate stress, uncovering what makes us empathetic, developing a life-changing medical device or exploring the future of creative expression. Our trailblazers have engineered modern San Francisco (Michael O’Shaughnessy), intercepted war communications (Emily Anderson), named human species (Professor William King) and propelled political change (President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins) across the world.

To the aspiring academics, we extend a warm invitation to join us in shaping the minds of future generations and delivering distinctive and impactful education and research. As a values-based, dynamic and forward-looking institution, we offer an environment that encourages intellectual curiosity and creative expression in a diverse, open and inclusive environment.
