It’s time to talk about street litter

As footfall increases and outdoor dining continues, PEL feel it is important to highlight the need for sufficient waste management resources on our streets

PEL is an Irish owned innovative manufacturer for waste reduction equipment serving a global customer base from the heart of Co Mayo. PEL's main customer base has been the hospitality sector, reducing waste glass bottle volume with our patented Jaws range of bottle rushers. Due to the pandemic our main market has closed, but PEL focused their attention on controlling, managing and reducing street litter by targeting local authorities with our latest invention BriteBin.

Our award-winning PEL BriteBin technology is a cloud-based software providing many solutions to environmental issues. It empowers councils, local authorities and private customers to not only cost-effectively reduce their expenditure on waste collection services, but to also enhance the environment and improve the well-being of people living in their local communities.

The PEL BriteBin technology allows for real-time monitoring across fleets. Alerts are generated which alert authorised authorities of the bins status. Imagery owned by PEL.

The BriteBin technology data management dashboard provides visibility of fill-levels across the bin fleets, which facilitates the deployment of resources to only those bins requiring service. The current practice is to schedule bin collections irrespective of the volume of waste they contain, which is a wasteful use of this costly resource. Individual bins equipped with a bin-fill level sensor feeds data via the SigFox or the GSM network to the BriteBin console. Upon reaching its maximum fill level the BriteBin software will send an alert notification to the authorised authority allowing resources to be deployed to only those bins requiring service, which increases the efficiency of the collection service and reduces carbon emissions.

Minister Eamon Ryan has signed a Single Use Plastics Directive this month, prohibiting the usage of single use plastic products. The PEL BriteBin supports this bill. A reduction of single use plastics and carbon emissions can be seen in Galway City where a fleet of PEL BriteBins have been installed. Council workers previously emptied bins in the city between four and six times a day. The over consumption of fuel used to drive the collection lorries as well as the high volume of single use plastic bags required daily was taking its toll on the city's environment.

Galway City Council took the initiative to help protect the environment and maintain a more sustainable approach to their waste management. A fleet of PEL BriteBin Solar compacting street bins can now be seen installed throughout the city. These bins hold up to 10 times the waste volume of the standard street bins they replaced. The council have reduced their bin collections to every second day as they are now able to monitor the fleet’s fill levels which allows for better efficiency in deploying collection services. Not only have they reduced their Co2 emissions, they have reduced their single use plastic volume by 90 per cent.

Similarly, in the east of the country Fingal County Council faced issues with bins in the area. Due to their coastal location, areas such as Howth and Malahide presented with a high volume of street litter due to seagulls pilfering from the open top bins in place. Birds and vermin are a common problem throughout the country when it comes to street litter which can pollute our waterways. Fingal County Council addressed this issue and sought out the PEL BriteBin Solar. Due to the nature of the BriteBins design, the sealed unit not only prevents bird pilfering, but it always prohibits the act of fly tipping into public bins. In addition to creating a solution to the problem faced by the council the PEL BriteBin has created an efficiency for the council. The integrated technology provides them with invaluable insights into their fleet, eg: how many times the bin was used in a day and at what times it was used the most.
