Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has called on the business sector to help develop the employment skills of disabled people by getting involved in the latest round of the 02 Ability Awards.

Officially opening the 2006 competition yesterday, Mr Ahern said the Government was aware of how society and the economy could benefit from getting more disabled people into the workforce.

"These benefits are the essence of the O2 Ability Awards," he said.

The awards, which are in their second year, are designed to recognise "business excellence and best practice" in the employment of people with disabilities.
