Aer Lingus has extended the deadline for the redemption of frequent-flyer TAB points due to what the airline described as an "unprecedented" demand for bookings through the discount scheme.

A spokeswoman for the airline admitted customers had been unable to get through to its TAB (Travel Award Bonus) reservation line in recent days.

However, she denied suggestions that this was a deliberate attempt to prevent people from availing of the discount scheme before it is curtailed next Sunday.

"We have had an unprecedented number of calls, and we are aware of the problems people are having in getting through.

"As of today, we have doubled the number of staff manning the telephones, and we have extended the deadline for telephone bookings until November 7th."

In addition, she said, people would be able to redeem TAB points through online bookings until the end of November.

"Customers will be advised on the website," she said, adding: "Everybody will be accommodated.

"Everybody will be able to redeem their points."

Aer Lingus claims to have about 80,000 frequent fliers who have earned TAB points. Such points are accumulated each time a member flies Aer Lingus, and can be cashed in for free flights or flight upgrades.

Someone who took three business class trips between Dublin and New York, for example, would qualify for a free economy-class trip between Dublin and Shannon.

While the general TAB scheme is being withdrawn, Aer Lingus' Gold Circle Club for high-spending business travellers will be retained, allowing members the benefit of priority check-in services, access to special lounges and flight upgrades.
