British Airways yesterday claimed a public relations victory in the long-running battle with arch-rival Virgin Atlantic Airways over its use of the advertising tag "the world's favourite airline".

It said Britain's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) had rejected calls by Virgin to prevent BA using the phrase, its major campaigning slogan for 16 years.

Industry sources said the investigation of the Virgin complaint was incomplete and that no official announcement was expected until June.
