Coca-Cola remains the leading grocery brand in the State, heading a list in which snacks, biscuits, crisps and treats account for nearly one-quarter of the leading brands, despite increased awareness about healthy eating.
The 2006 Checkout/AC-Nielsen Top 100 Brands survey also shows that, despite the attraction of cheaper prices for non-branded goods, Irish consumers still choose to purchase well-known grocery brands, which are growing in value year on year.
Signs of an increase in healthy consumption is seen in the rise in categories such as bottled water, energy drinks and juices. According to the survey, Ballygowan is now a top 20 brand, having risen through the ranks over the past five years from number 26 to 14.
Just seven brands account for one-quarter of the Top 100 list by value, although the leading brands are growing sales more slowly than those further down the list.
Despite the presence of international big hitters, indigenous brands also rank highly with Avonmore, Lucozade, Jacobs and Brennans and the "superbrands" of the Irish grocery market.
Budweiser was revealed as the top beer brand and the overall top alcohol brand in Ireland. The Australian Jacob's Creek and Smirnoff Vodka were the top wine and spirits brands respectively.
