EIsland, the consortium led by Mr Denis O'Brien, has extended the closing date for its offer for Eircom until September 28th, despite winning the support of shareholders controlling only 1.5 per cent of the company.

The rival bid from Valentia Telecommunications which already has the support of shareholders controlling in the region of 55 per cent of the company - closes on September 21st.
