NCB Stockbrokers suggests that the Year 2000 computer chip problem (Y2K) and Economic Monetary Union could present profitably opportunities for investors.

The 2000 problem is estimated to be worth $600 billion (£431.7 billion) to solutions providers and promises huge potential returns for investors in the most successful of these companies.

Most are quoted on the US stockmarkets, with 36 such companies listed on Nasdaq, the largest being Keane Inc.

In Britain, Micro Focus is seen as the main stockmarket play in that sector, while in Germany, CMG has both a significant exposure to 2000 and EMU.

Two Irish companies worth watching according to NCB are Piercom and Millennium Solutions, both of which are expected to seek a stock market listing in the future.

NCB is also recommending Athlone Extrusions as a good bet, suggesting that investors should buy the shares at around £1. It recently reported strong half-year earnings and is expected to put in a strong full-year performance.
