German shares ended higher after a thin session although a lower opening on Wall Street and turbulence on foreign exchange markets dampened sentiment later in the day. The Xetra DAX, which measures all-day electronic trading, pared gains to end 36.06 points higher at 5,784.40 points.

Paris CAC-40: 4,126.33 (+61.29)

French stocks closed with a hefty gain, backed by rises in oil and banking shares although operators remained nervous over Asia and volumes were relatively light.

In the oil sector, Total climbed 3.44 per cent to 782 francs and Elf Aquitaine rose 2.61 per cent to Ffr825 on news that OPEC members planned to cut more than 1.2 million barrels per day compared to forecasts of around 800,000 barrels.

Italian shares ended weaker after following Wall Street lower in thin volume trade. BCI bucked the general trend, however, to end up 1.62 per cent at 10,470 lire after press reports, later denied, that it could be the target of a takeover bid by a large French bank.
