Greece’s biggest bank yesterday shored up its balance sheet with a €450 million ($578 million) fundraising, hours before publication of the European-wide bank stress tests.

The move by National Bank of Greece to strengthen its capital base by borrowing funds through subordinated bank debt was seen as a positive sign by analysts and investors.

Analysts said much of the private placement was taken up by Greek shipowners based in Athens.
