US biotechnology firm Amgen’s $200 million expansion of its Dún Laoghaire premises will transform the Dublin plant into “one of the most sophisticated on the planet”, Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said
.A total of 100 jobs are due to be created as a result of the investment supported by IDA Ireland, with approximately 350 construction jobs expected during the building phase.
The announcement came a year after Amgen, the world’s largest biotechnology company, bought the former Pfizer plant. Last year’s move safeguarded 280 jobs, and shipping of medicinal products from the site is due to begin next year.
“The investment will transform the plant into one of the most sophisticated technological manufacturing sites on the planet . . . It demonstrates the strategic importance of Amgen’s Irish operations,” Mr Kenny said.
The expansion will include the construction of a 11,700sq m building extension; a new production plant and expanded warehouse facilities.
Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore also attended the event in his constituency. He said: “Every additional decision made by Amgen, by other companies to invest in Ireland, is a vote of confidence in our country.”
