Burglaries are far more likely to occur at this time of year when homeowners leave their properties unoccupied and unprotected while away on holiday.

Unfortunately, the lack of security that attracted an initial robbery may also attract a second theft. Months later, cheeky thieves may return to the scene of the crime to take newly purchased replacement goods.

In response to rising summer burglaries, insurance provider Axa has published a fact sheet for policyholders taking a break. The vast majority of thefts and burglaries are opportunistic.

"Good physical security remains the best way to keep burglars at bay. Don't take a chance with flimsy locks or window beading that can be removed from the outside," says Axa's Mr Tom Pejnovic.

Homeowners and renters, should follow these few tips to ensure security of their home and valuables:

Cultivate the talents of nosey neighbours - ask them to keep an eye on your home;

Tell gardai you will be away;

Give a relation, friend or neighbour keys to your home;

Close all windows on every floor;

Install alarm systems and automatic lights inside your home;

Purchase external, motion-sensitive lights;

Join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme;

Ensure your garage is as secure as your home. Thieves may steal lawnmowers, power tools or use items from the garage to break into the home;

Remove expensive items from sight if windows are uncovered;

When replacing goods, do not leave cardboard boxes lying around outside as an advertisement that new goods have been purchased.
