International Business Machines (IBM) plans to start selling computer workstations that use the same powerful technology used in the supercomputer `Deep Blue' that beat chess champion Mr Garry Kasparov. The new machines are aimed at companies that do advanced design work, such as aircraft maker Boeing and automaker Ferrari.

Offering the technology of a supercomputer in a less-expensive workstation is part of IBM's efforts to stay ahead in the highperformance market.

The new machine, called the Model 397, will sell for $29,900 (£20,479) IBM said. It will have technology similar to IBM's RS/6000 supercomputers.

IBM said the new workstations are some of the most advanced ever.
