Internet usage in Ireland has grown by 5 per cent in the past 12 months with 38 per cent of Irish adults now using the internet regularly.

The figures are contained in the second Joint National Internet Research (JNIR) report which shows that 1.2 million Irish adults regularly surf the Net.

The report tracks 17 websites, measuring their total Irish internet audience.

It found that Yahoo remains the number one site in the Republic with 664,000 visitors while Eircom lies in second place, with 449,000 adult users.

Other popular sites included Ticketmaster, which attracted 310,000 users to put it in third place.

Ireland.com, the website of The Irish Times, remains the most popular media site with 169,000 readers accessing the site on a regular basis. More than two thirds of the site's Irish readers are in the ABC1 category while more than half are aged between 25 and 44 years.

IrishExaminer.com had 52,000 users and ThePost.ie had 32,000.

In the recruitment sector, Irishjobs.ie attracted 139,000 visitors, RecruitIreland had 116,000 and Monster.ie had 76,000.

Myhome.ie, the property website for those looking for a new home, attracted 125,000 users.
