A cross-border investment initiative for the north-west region was presented yesterday by the Tanaiste, Ms Harney, and Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment in the Northern Ireland executive.

The initiative, Ireland North West: The Solution to your Investment Needs, aims to provide potential investors with relevant information to assist their investment decisions in the Derry, Limavady, Strabane and Donegal regions.

The north-west region cross-Border group is co-ordinating the initiative and has published a regional brochure and website, at www.irelandnorthwest.com, to promote the region.

At the introduction of the initiative in Dublin yesterday, Sir Reg said local councils could complement the work of the IDB and IDA Ireland by sending a positive message about the extent of co-operation between people.

Ms Harney said the initiative would complement a Government plan announced in May which brought together the IDA and IDB to promote the north-west region.

"It makes economic sense for the IDA and IDB to work together with local bodies," she said.

"While the IDA and IDB are in competition in a global marketplace for foreign direct investment, there are areas where they can share resources and work together, for the benefit of everyone on both sides of the Border."

Earlier Sir Reg and Ms Harney opened the Inter Trade Ireland road show in Dublin.

This body, the official name for the cross-Border trade and business development body set up under the Belfast Agreement, will work to maximise economic co-ordination.
