A liquidator was appointed at a creditors meeting yesterday to wind up Millfield Textiles in Cork, after 148 workers ceased working there on Janaury 16th. Mr Martin Ferris, of Ferris & Associates, Dublin, and his team are examining the assets of the plant at Blackpool, Cork, which will be sold to pay off one of the main creditors, the Revenue Commissioners, who are believed to be owned around £700,000 by the company. Millfield Textiles started production of underwear and socks in the summer of 1995, after a group of seven businessmen bought the premises of the Sunbeam plant which closed earlier that year.

One source said yesterday that £450,000 had been invested in the new plant since 1995, not including £365,000 provided by Forbairt in grant support. The company has about 200 creditors.

Mr Jerry Mullins, SIPTU Cork Number One branch secretary, said his concern now was that the 120 union members would receive their statutory requirements from the Government. Sunbeam went into liquidation in May, 1995, with debts of over £2 million. Many of its 175 workers were re-employed by Millfield.
