German shares ended weaker after an afternoon rally was ended by the Dow's weakness and a falling dollar. Dealers see possible gains next week if the current level of the DAX holds, but this is conditional on events in Asia and how the scandal facing the US President, Mr Clinton works out.

Paris CAC-40: 2,966.15 (-22.44)

French shares ended markedly lower under the combined effect of a weak dollar and Wall Street. This was made worse by uncertainty involving President Clinton's position.

Milan Mibtel: 18,180 (-259)

Italian shares closed near the day's lows, as US shares opened lower and a rally in Fiat ran out of steam. Eni shares slumped 3.3 per cent.
