A late burst of panic selling cut short another rebound yesterday, nearly slicing 200 more points off the Dow and extending the stock market's two-week slump.

The Dow Jones industrial average finished 143.66 points - or 1.6% - lower at 8,883.29, after falling as much as 198 points during the pre-weekend plunge. The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 22.28 to 1,120.67, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 47.19 to 1,872.39.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 9.75 to 419.75.
