THE NATIONAL Union of Journalists is to seek a meeting with Independent News & Media to discuss possible severance terms for staff at the Sunday Tribunenewspaper, which is in receivership.
The Tribune's 43 staff passed a motion yesterday calling on IN&M to "fully honour responsibilities to employees" and to "ensure that workers are properly recompensed" if the newspaper folds.
IN&M owns 29.9 per cent of the Tribuneand appointed Jim Luby of McStay Luby as receiver to seek a buyer for the title. He is believed to have received a small number of expressions of interest, but it is not clear whether these will lead to a firm investment proposal.
Séamus Dooley, Irish secretary of the NUJ, said workers would be entitled “only to statutory redundancy” if the firm was liquidated, which Mr Luby said would happen if no buyer was found this month.
IN&M said yesterday it had not yet received any request from the NUJ for a meeting. Mr Luby declined to comment.
