US stocks ended a lacklustre session with mixed results yesterday as investors stepped back from Friday's rally in technology shares. Dow industrials struggled to a slight gain, but most stocks ended lower.
At the close of trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 1.90 at 11,030.33. The blue-chip index stayed locked in a narrow range for much of the session.
Broader stock indicators were lower. The Standard and Poor's 500 fell 7.53 to 1,344.13, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 42.29 to 2,844.77.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 13-to-9 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,753 down, 1,220 up and 556 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 652.22 million shares against 802.51 million in the previous session. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 1.54 to 439.65.
