The Irish and Northern Irish electricity regulators are studying how to best use capacity on power cables linking the island and Britain.

“With considerably increased levels of wind capacity on the Irish system in the years to come, the benefits of increased interconnection between Ireland and Great Britain will outweigh the costs,” the two regulators said in a paper published yesterday.

“Making the best use of the interconnector capacity that exists will be of economic benefit to Ireland.”

The committee that runs the all-island Irish power market is seeking views from interested parties on the best way to use the capacity, it said. It may change rules to reduce differences to other markets in northwest Europe. – (Bloomberg)
