Tesco has strengthened its position as the dominant player in the Irish supermarket sector over the last 12 months, according to Kantar Worldpanel Ireland data, with the British retailer now holding a market share of 27.9 per cent.

The figures show Tesco grew its share by 1.3 per cent in the year to the end of November.

Dunnes, second to Tesco in the data, saw its share fall by 3.2 per cent in the year to the end of November from 24.1 per cent to 23.2 per cent.

German headquartered Aldi made up ground on all of its competitors, growing its share by 31.5 per cent from 4.7 per cent to 6.2 per cent, as it entered a tie with fellow discount retailer Lidl as the fourth largest of the multiples in the State.

SuperValu remains in third place , with its share decreasing to 19.4 per cent (down 0.2 per cent year-on-year) from 19.5 per cent.

Superquinn is now the sixth largest multiple after seeing its market share slip by 3.1 per cent to 5.3 per cent.

Other outlets, which include stores such as Spar, Centra, greengrocers, butchers, Marks and Spencer and cross-Border retailers, saw their share fall by 5.3 per cent to 11.7 per cent.
