ONE MORE THING: Mark Twain said rumours of his demise had been greatly exaggerated but this could equally have applied to Michael Dawson of the Gift Voucher Shop after rumours circulated that the business was bunched.

“It’s total rubbish,” Dawson told me. “We had this about two weeks ago on Facebook after HMV collapsed. That went away. Then we started getting calls. It’s social media gone crazy.”

GVS is 53 per cent controlled by An Post. Funds from card sales are held by BofI and ringfenced for distribution. “This is the safest product out there,” Dawson stressed. GVS had a record €150m turnover in 2012 from the sale of a million cards.
