The new Cork factory will manufacture disk drives and most of the jobs will be for graduates and technicians. The company is also expected to have a huge research and development capacity.

The Seagate Technology hoard will not formally adopt the proposal until its hoard meeting towards the end of June. However, representatives of the company have been in discussions with the IDA over a long period.

The jobs were won in face of intense competition from Northern Ireland and latterly Scotland. The IDA has been targeting Seagate as one of the largest hard disk manufacturing companies in the world.

Seagate already employs around 1,400 in Clonmel and a similar number in Derry out of a total workforce of over 60,000.

A week before the British general election reports appeared that the company would be expanding its Derry plant. The Derry plant manufactures read write heads for hard disk drives.

Mr Richard Bruton, the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, is due to officially open the Clonmel factory next week.

A spokesman for the IDA said negotiations were always ongoing with Seagate but an announcement could not be expected this week.

The jobs announcement will be the largest so far this year. It follows the announcement of 1,500 jobs for the Cork area over the last six months worth a total investment of £100 million.

Over 250 jobs were announced for the region in March. Millfield - Textiles is to provide 50 new jobs while Ferrero Ireland said it will create a further 80 jobs.

Last week, 125 new jobs were announced in Limerick and a week earlier 1,400 in Clare and the Shannon area.

Dublin and Galway have also seen jobs announcements in recent months.
